This is a cluster of islands protected and sheltered by mainland Sulawesi. The added benefit of security has allowed the Togian Islands to develop in a very special way. Be it on land or in the water you are sure to find little surprises in this isolated part of the world. Free from many of the modern hinderances of life. You will be able to lose yourself in the innocence spirit of nature and natural living.
Getting to the islands is not an easy task but there are a couple of ways. Most people reach the islands by first flying in to Palu then quick trip to Poso, then on to Ampana from there the only way is by boat. If you are in the area already you can jump on the ferry that runs from Gorontalo to Posa weekly that will drop you off on the Togian islands. If you look at a map you will find yourself 1 degree south of the equator in the Tomini Bay that is around 1,000 square km of clear blue waters and rugged islands.
The key word for these islands is relaxation, beautiful clean remote beaches to enjoy all by yourself. To explore why not rent a canoe and paddle from beach to beach and visit the many coves and inlets. While you see the lush green hills don’t forget to look down and see the fantastic sea garden beneath. There are 5 types of reef present, from fringe (close to the shore) to barrier reef (runs parallel to the shore) to atolls (reef in circle formation) to patch reef (grows on slightly submerged land. Put this all together in one location and it makes for great diving and snorkeling guaranteeing a great variety of sea life.
On the Islands you will also find some interesting animals such as the rare and endangered Coconut Crab, a type of hermit crab. Carrying its shelter, protection and home on its back it can grow to a very healthy 5kg. Other creatures to definitely look out for are the monitor lizards that live on the islands, with necks, powerful tails and sharp claws they are built for the hunt. But not to be alarmed as they avoid humans and keep to themselves in the jungles.
The best time to visit is in the dry season around Early June to late Sept it won’t be too hot as the gentle sea breezes make it balmy and peaceful.
